Very simplistic, obvious plot. I hope the rest of the series is better. I would not waste my time finding out. I love Key West, but some of the story makes me wonder if the author has ever been there herself

No Place to Die Murder in the KeysBook #1 Jaden Skye 9781640290587 Books Reviews

Material girl Olivia and hot Todd run off to Key West for a romantic getaway weekend. Instead of getting engaged, Todd winds up dead. She's the only suspect. Enter two bizarre dysfunctional families, corrupt business partners, ex-girlfriends bent on revenge, bumbling cops, and an author who can't wrangle her storyline.

Add shallow repetitive sentences, improbable, and implausible events no Miranda Act was read to Olivia, hospitals are careful about patient confidentiality. And odd turns of phrase (walked into the horse's mouth), weak verbs and nouns bolstered up with a plethora of superlatives, adverbs and adjectives, is enough to murder the senses.

And then there's veracity of location. One reader noted that "some of the story makes me wonder if the author has ever been there [Key West] herself." I had the very same thought when I read her Caribbean "Death By" series. It seems like she's writing her scenes by way of proxy with Google Maps and Yelp, doesn't it?

Sadly Skye's not a new writer, but an old hack. What I don't get is why she persists in her slovenly writing habits. You'd think that with so many books under her belt (more than a dozen), she'd either learn to craft a decent sentence, or at least keep her facts straight. Usually she's a good storyteller, and I like the locations, but her writing style is otherwise an insult to readers. I won't mention the epic plot fail in the closet.

Suffice to day, this book is even worse than any of Jaden Skye's 12 previous, grievous "Death By..." series. Poor plot, poor character development (Olivia's an idiot), weak sentence structure, poor vocabulary. There are far too many implausible events for the reader's suspension of disbelief to kick in. Deus et Machina resolves the storyline. Her writing is otherwise an insult to readers. Don't bother.

(I wrote a long, indepth review of this book, with examples, only to have crash it as I was adding the title. I don't think I can resurrect it, but I was able to save one lone paragraph in the buffer. So this will have to do, as I've spent far too much time on it. Cut my losses.)
If I were a book editor I'd have sent this manuscript back for re-writes. Several times. I will not finish the book, having endured about 47% of it on . Hoping it would get better. It hasn't. Storyline so far Man dies mysteriously the day after proposing to his girlfriend while on vacation in the Florida Keys. They've kept the relationship a secret so neither family knows about it. There's a suspect in custody within minutes [it seems], both families come to grieve - and argue. Observations [1] Dialogue is repetitive; characters say the same thing in slightly different ways sometimes three times in the same chapter. [2] Character emotions and reactions don't ring true. The fiancé doesn't spend any time in reflection, looking at the engagement ring, becoming emotional. On the day of the memorial service she's able to pull it together and give a non-scripted speech, and later joins her father on the balcony of her hotel room for dinner while they discuss their legal issues. [3] The writing borders on juvenile. Is this a book for adults or tweens? Can't tell, and it really doesn't matter.
Olivia and Todd fly down to Key West for what was to be a romantic and magical weekend. Olivia wonders if, and hopes he will, propose to her. Todd dies mysteriously the night of his proposal. It was soon discovered Todd was murdered and Olivia was a suspect. Olivia searches for answers and discovers things about Todd and his family she wished she never knew - discoveries that made her realize that she never really knew the man she had loved for the past five months and must come to grips with who he was and who killed him.

Author Jayden Skye steps out of the protagonist point of view with author intrusion in the first chapter when she writes, "She brushed her long, silky blonde hair back from her exquisite face..." Both Olivia and Todd are too perfect in looks to be believable, and Todd's dialogue sounds unnatural and lacks emotion.

Jayden uses an overabundance of adjectives when describing characters or setting long, silky blonde hair; exquisite face; scrubby brush; beautiful rock; narrow, rough road; long, low, wooden building, etc. It is author telling rather than showing. The frequent use of "ly" words is distracting almost to the point of becoming irritating, especially the words quickly and suddenly. I think the author may have been trying to give her story a sense of immediacy or fast pace, but it only slowed it down.

The plot could have been intriguing, but the story is written in such a predictable manner that there was not much mystery. The author spent too much time telling the emotions of the characters, and her repetitive use of the fact that Olivia and Todd had dated for only five months being too soon to be engaged distracted from the story line.

On the positive side there was no vulgarity or sex scenes.

I give No Place to Die by Jayden Skye a 2-star rating.

Review by Rita Kroon, author of Kiss Your Mommy Goodbye and Letters from the Past
It will having you saying to the main character...noooo...don't do it, but you can't stop reading! It's a page turner for sure with a lot of unexpected twists and turns! A good read.
I received this as free copy and am voluntarily submitting my review.
