I bought this book about a year ago; it has changed the way I practice the piano since then.In a simple and friendly way, Francois Richard explains a set of techniques to memorize music, which, in my opinion, lead to a deeper level, that of understanding music.
Once a piece of piano music is understood (that is, the form of the music, not the hand positions), than it becomes simple: melodies are framed in the flow of harmony and the rest of the notes are evident to find on the keyboard most of the time.
This book is about understanding the fact that the challenge of learning music is inside our mind, not on the keyboard. We must learn music inside, before we play it.

Great book
Every page of this wonderful book is full of invaluable information. Francois Richard said that it was the sum of fifteen years of highlighted information from conferences, books and master-classes and it shows! It's very dense and is like reading forty master books in one. A must have for who wants to master the score in a professional way.
Finally a book about music memorization that worth to have. After struggle for many years trying to figure out how to memorize music, this book really got straight to the point. Don't waste your time looking for another. This book is the answer!
I used analysis almost exclusively to memorize piano music. With simple works it is a great help to understand the pieces, but for more complicated music even if I understood them, I had the greatest difficulties memorizing them. There were some passages that I could simply not memorize except by repeating them endlessly and I knew that, not having them in my conscious memory was dangerous. My fingers tend to let me down when they like! The mental practice in "Music in your head" enables me to hear and memorize right away the most complicated music when I want. This is fantastic!
This book made me love playing the piano. All my fears of playing by memory in front of an audience went away. Also, being able to practice my music anywhere at any time during the day and conceive my interpretations in my head gives me a pleasure that I never experienced before!
Found this to be full of a wealth of good information and ideas. Well laid out and easy to read.
I haven't yet implimented the whole process, but it looks and sounds good. Have just been taking some ideas and implimenting them. So would probably be getting better results if I followed the process. It does remind me alot of Gordon Stewart's DVD on Memorisation, but with additional detail on how to impliment the ideas into learning a piece using a step by step process. Whereas the DVD just covers the basic idea and it's up to the viewer to interpret.
Thought it could have done with including information in the Relative pitch section on Solfeggio (moveable Do). Didn't understand why it was left out when it's just as easy to learn Solfa as opposed to the relative pitch process suggested. Also takes a similar amount of time in regards to internalising, but for me the results are a musical understanding and flexibility that just aren't available with other approaches to relative pitch. It also improves your sight reading ability and intonation, so lost a star for that. But hey, that's just me and the process suggested will work for those who do it.
In regards to international shipping, choosing standard shipping will probably help to avoid customs charges.
This book is marvelous! In a fun and easy to understand way Mr.Richards combines some theory with a very clever aural skills method and then follows with photographically memorizing and practicing the piano music on a table top or even in your head while you play it on your mattress! In over a half a century of performing I hug this book every time I see it and it will develop you to you highest potential.What more can you ask for? It's a MUST have!!!
